- Main line
- 20–30 lb braid
- Leader
- 30–50 lb fluorocarbon (heavier near barnacle-covered pilings)
- Hook
- 2/0–4/0 circle hook or a heavy jig
- Rig
- Knocker rig or free-lined live bait; sabiki to catch bait
- Lure / bait
- Live shrimp, pilchards, or a bucktail jig
- Knot
- Uni or snell to hook; FG to leader
