Improved Clinch Knot

Tying mono or fluorocarbon to a hook, lure, or swivel — the classic first knot.

How to tie it

  1. 1Pass the tag end through the hook eye.
  2. 2Wrap the tag around the standing line 5–7 times.
  3. 3Bring the tag back through the small loop just above the eye.
  4. 4Then pass it through the big loop you just formed.
  5. 5Wet the knot and pull the standing line to cinch it down; trim the tag.

Common mistakes

  • Not wetting the knot (heat weakens it)
  • Too few wraps on heavy line

When not to use it

Braided line — it slips. Use a Palomar or Uni instead.
