- 4000–6000 spinning (surf) / 2500–3000 (freshwater bank)

- 20–40 lb fluoro (surf) / 12–20 lb fluoro (freshwater)
- Hook
- 1/0–3/0 circle hook (bait) or a jig
- Rig
- Fish-finder / high-low rig with pyramid sinker (surf)
- Lure / bait
- Fresh cut bait, sand fleas, shrimp — or a jig/spoon
- Knot
- Uni knot to hook; double uni for shock leader
