Surf Rod
A long, powerful rod built to launch bait and lures past the breakers from the beach. Usually 9–12 feet with a long handle for two-handed casting.
When to use it
- Beach fishing
- Casting heavy bait rigs and sinkers
- Reaching the trough/sandbar
Strengths
- Huge casting distance
- Keeps line above the waves
- Backbone for big surf fish
Weaknesses
- Heavy and unwieldy up close
- Overkill for calm inshore water

Line range: 15–30 lb mono / 30–65 lb braid + shock leader
Lure range: 2–8 oz (bait + sinker)
Best reel: Large spinning (6000–10000) or conventional surf reel
Best environment: Open beach / surf zone
Best species: Redfish, pompano, black drum, striped bass, sharks
Common mistakes
- Under-powering it so you can't cast a pyramid sinker
- Not rinsing sand/salt after every trip
